Campus oasis: Our home among nature

Lewis University stands as a distinguished arboretum, accredited for its extensive collection of over 2,400 trees and wooded areas spanning our 376-acre campus. Featuring a remarkable diversity of more than 140 tree species, our natural environment offers a rich and immersive experience for all.

The term “veritable arboretum” signifies that the campus and staff have been recognized for their dedicated and meticulous management of the grounds, which includes an abundant variety of trees and natural life.

Since 2009, the university has proudly held the esteemed title of “Tree Campus USA,” a testament to the groundskeepers’ unwavering commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable practices.

This accolade underscores the dedication to providing an exceptional and environmentally conscious setting for academic pursuits and community engagement. As stewards of this thriving ecosystem, our hard-working groundskeeping staff continues to uphold the highest standards of ecological responsibility, ensuring a vibrant and inspiring campus landscape for each season to come.

Between 1979 and 1989, the late Brother Ambrose Groble, FSC, initiated a campus beautification project at Lewis. During this period, he planted 189 trees, representing 36 different species, contributing significantly to the diverse and lush greenery that now graces our campus. Brother Groble’s influence led other brothers and current staff to continue the legacy he had created.

Isaac Benka, a junior computer science major, shared “The campus beauty was a major factor for me. It’s calming and makes studying way more enjoyable. It’s not your typical campus; it feels like a welcoming community where nature is still constantly all around you. When I feel stressed or notice I am getting bogged down by homework, I love to go for walks on the nature trail. Hiking is enjoyable for me so campus allows me to somewhat do the same while I am away from home.”

The Burnham Centennial Nature Trail is located behind parking lot Z. Students and staff are all welcome to explore the natural beauty of the trail. This natural oasis invites both students and staff to unwind amidst the calming embrace of nature.

The trail also features a unique Frisbee golf course, providing an additional recreational opportunity for our students and staff to enjoy.

The colorful flowers, vibrant greens and falling leaves at the campus entrance catch everyone’s eye. Yet, what many miss is the behind-the-scenes care and preservation that keeps it all so beautiful. Without Dwight DeVries, Superintendent of Grounds, and his staff, none of this beauty may have been the same.

Whether you’re seeking a peaceful stroll, a moment of quiet reflection or an opportunity to observe the local flora and fauna, the trail and campus provides a perfect escape.
