On Friday, April 30, the women’s tennis team fell to Southwest Baptist 5-0 in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex in Romeoville, Illinois. With this last set of matches, the Flyers finished their season with a 6-8 record.
The Bearcats started ahead as they took over the first two double matches. At No. 3 doubles, Lola Cincunegui and Diana Cabrera beat freshman Grace Sueflohn and sophomore Jovana Vujanic, while Catarina Zhing and Elsa Pascual defeated juniors Joie Reisch and Sophie Davis.
Regarding the single matches, the Bearcats won four out of the six contests with two unfinished matches to clinch the match. At No. 3 singles, Constanca Crespo beat Vujanic (6-4, 6-1), at No. 5 singles Pascual beat Sueflohn (6-1, 6-2), and at No. 1 singles, Cincunegui defeated Davis (7-5, 6-1) and Dona Abohabaga beat senior Rita Pedroso (6-2, 6-3).
Despite the loss, the team feels accomplished looking back at their overall performance during the regular season. “I would say that some takeaways we got from this last game are to not give up and keep going no matter what the score is,” said Vujanic. “We went out there and gave our everything and that is what matters.”
The Elk Grove Village native considers that this year the team had a very “successful” season despite having to deal with the pandemic burdens, specifically owing all to her coach and the teammates. “Coach V is really motivating and helped us a lot during matches and practices and how to display good confidence on the court, said Vujanic. “Our team culture also is very supportive and uplifting.”
Although tennis is considered a spring sport the Flyers would have a few matches during the fall in previous years. With a reduced season due to COVID, they are hopeful about having a full season during the next upcoming school year.
