On Oct. 17, the women’s bowling team rolled into their 2021 season. In the Penguin Classic, hosted by Youngstown State University, the team took a third place finish. The Flyers took major wins over four top eleven teams. Two bowlers secured themselves a spot in the top ten.
The three-day tournament was fought for each frame, but the third place win should help put the team in a good position for the rest of the fall season and into the spring.
Senior business major Kylie Johnson placed fourth in the tournament. She also gained a place in the all tournament team for the fourth time in her collegiate career. Johnson shot a 1,075 followed by her teammate DeAlani Fishbeck, who shot a 1,014.
“We started off hot, ” said Johnson, with hopes that the positive start shows promise for the 2021-22 bowling team.
The Flyers play year-round with preseason beginning in September and their regular season ending in mid-November. Their championship season begins in January and with a good tournament play, the team will extend their season into May.
With a long year ahead of them, the team has to keep a good mindset. Johnson said, “We want to stay consistent and be resilient with each game.” She also added that it is easy to get down on yourself because you want to do well for your team. The Flyers strive to, “stay present in the moment,” according to Johnson, who spoke with a positive mentality about the future for the team.
Based on the encourageable start, the team of twelve appears to have much more to bring to the table in the upcoming weeks. The women Flyers’ next tournament begins Saturday, Oct. 23 in St.Charles, Missouri. The tournament will be hosted by Lindenwood University at the Lions Classic.
