As part of the university’s continuing efforts to help students with their mental health, the campus community welcomed a new member who will help students in need of a cuddly companion – and his name is Jet.
In the last couple of years, the university has developed a strong relationship with Will County State’s Attorney, James Glasgow, founder of the League of Extraordinary Canines and Friends. In light of this relationship, Glasgow decided to sponsor the LUPD with a dog.
At the time, the school was not interested in a police dog who could sniff drugs or bombs, as these threats are not posed to the community. When the idea of a canine was presented to LUPD, officers suggested getting a comfort dog. Glasgow approved and decided to help the school accomplish this goal.
“The only thing he is trained to do is to be a comfort dog,” said Michael Zegadlo, LUPD’s Chief of Police. His purpose is to help those struggling mentally and to provide comfort in moments when they need it the most. For example, Jet was called on moving day when a student suffered an anxiety attack. His presence there was well received and helped the student get through her struggle.
“The only thing that we would maybe consider down the road, is training Jet to track,” Zegadlo explained. LUPD could potentially use Jet to track people in case they got lost on the nature trail.
To request Jet, students and faculty can visit the LUPD website by clicking on the “community education” tab and select the bottom link that says “Request a community education program.” Jet is available for presentations, classes and mental health issues.
His handler, Sargent Lyle Nettles, works with him during the day and takes him back home in his special dog-friendly car, where Jet has a family and place to rest. Sargent Nettles states, “[Jet] is very laid back. He loves people and is a regular puppy that loves chewing and playing.”
Before Jet came to campus, LUPD brainstormed names for their canine companion. They eventually presented four names where the majority preferred Jet.
LUPD wanted to clarify that Jet is not the school mascot and won’t be seen wearing a costume. However, he will be making an appearance at future school events.
The university works with many different companies to provide mental health support for students. This is because they wish to help them not only on a personal level, but also in academics, so students can succeed while they pursue their degrees.
