South Hall was crowded with representatives from numerous agencies that were ready and willing to interview Lewis’ undergraduate nursing students for potential positions in their respective clinical fields. From the atrium to the dean’s office hallway, students and faculty eagerly waited to converse with their potential future employers.
Some of the organizations present included University of Chicago Medicine, Silver Cross Hospital, Ascension and many others. The booths had plenty of pens, stickers, pins, pamphlets and ice packs in the shape of hearts for students to enjoy and take home to remember their experience speaking to the representatives.
Nazhruddin Lei Macalandong, a sophomore nursing student, recognized the importance of the event, “It’s a great opportunity for me to make connections and speak to real people that I might have the privilege of working with in the future.”
When asked about his feelings about the event, he mentioned, “I really like how involved everyone is with gaining new insight and talking to people even if they’re feeling nervous about it. I really appreciate the organizers of the event and Lewis for allowing me and my fellow nursing students to have this opportunity.”
While the event was aimed at upperclassmen attempting to make connections for future employment opportunities or even to get a job after the semester ends, all levels were welcomed. Some organizations encouraged and offered volunteer opportunities that sparked interest in many freshmen nursing students looking to join the Student Nursing Association.
Students were also encouraged to fill out passports in order to win prizes such as t-shirts and cup sleeves. In order to successfully earn a prize, each student had to have visited a certain number of booths and received a sticker to prove that they were there.
The head of the nursing department, Dr. Tina Bobo, was present encouraging her students to make connections and take advantage of this great opportunity to learn more about the places they will eventually be employed.
