Latinos in Medicine hosted an event in the Charlie’s Place serving matcha and chai tea lattes to students while also providing a coffee shop style environment for studying. It took place Thursday, March 6 from 4 pm to 8 pm, offering ample time for students to order a fun drink, chat with their friends, get some homework done or study for any midterms.
The matcha and chai each cost $3 at the base price but if syrups or starbucks recipe cold foam were added, there were extra charges. They offered vanilla, strawberry, chocolate chip, cookie dough and caramel. Most cups were branded with a “Latinos in Medicine” sticker, promoting their club even further.
For their stickers, President of the club, Briana Leon, freshman nursing major, appointed her mom for help, “We designed our own logo, and my mom printed them out on her Cricut.”
With inclusivity in mind they provided multiple options for milk alongside their array of flavors. During the event, Carolina Dominguez, a freshman nursing major, was one of the baristas. She commented, “The most popular drink order was matcha with strawberry and vanilla syrup. A lot of people would do regular and oat milk, since they both ran out.”
The event was quite popular, as students who were members of the Latino Associated Student Organization attended in support of Latinos in Medicine and there was widespread advertising on social media. Leon mentioned that, “We had to close early because we ended up running out of syrups and our dairy options.”
Raised a little under $200 from this event The first year a club is at Lewis, they don’t get any funding so Latinos in Medicine have begun organizing multiple fundraisers and have raised a lot of funds to keep providing the community with fun events. Leon stated, “Since it was our first event, we think it was a big success and it’s showing that we have a bright future as a club.”
