Tiktok has become extremely popular within social media, promoting a variety of different content for each user. For example, skits are commonplace, as they are often entertaining to a wide audience. “Hells Belles” is a series of skits produced by Jaysea Lynn, known by the handle @sea.ya.later.
“Hells Belles” is a series that revolves around the process of judgment in the afterlife. The main characters work at “The Hellp Desk,” a pun regarding hell. The desk is the entrance to hell. The workers then have to redirect souls that are incredibly angry at their predicament or believe they have done nothing wrong (despite it being very obvious that they have). These customers are then faced with a harsh reality check before being sent down to their levels for punishment.
Although titled “Hells Belles,” they take a neutral stance on religion within the series. Characters acknowledge that all judgment systems exist and that each soul chooses their judgment system based on their beliefs when they were alive. There is also not the visual presence of a god figure in the series, but the main character Lily always has him on speed dial.
The staff of the Hellp Desk are mainly souls who live in Paradise, though there are some demons who fill in for them when need be. Lily is a soul who died due to cancer and started the Hellp Desk. Meanwhile, Penny is a soul who was young when she passed. Penny’s timid nature balances out Lily’s sassiness, reaching a more moderate version of the extremes their two characters provide. A third influential soul who works out the Hellp Desk is Judy, an older southern lady who is very protective of those she cares about. Judy commonly fills a motherly role, both to the staff and the souls who have just been sentenced on the other side of the desk. Between the three, souls often realize there is a reason why they are down there and move on without further complaints.
The dynamic between these three make it so the series is always moving. When one is out of the desk, another fills in for them. The story also follows the personal lives of the three and shows their paradises in heaven. It is through this that the romance of the story begins to emerge.
All three of these ladies love to read, as is evidenced by their wide selection of books shown in video. This alludes to the fact that the creator of the series is an author who is currently working on writing a book based on the story of “Hells Belles.” On sea.ya.later’s TikTok page, she posts about the struggles and process of writing a book while managing a social media page with 1.8 million followers.
The story touches on a lot of major issues from the unique standpoint of not being able to influence it at all. With a lot of sass and backtalk, Lily, Penny and Judy live out a retail worker’s dream of talking back to the customer. The three ladies behind the counter bring forth rebuilding their relationships and lives – all while having a wicked sense of humor and being dead, of course.
