A team to keep your eye on: women’s bowling

Women’s bowling looks to continue to impress for the 2024-2025 season. The Flyers finished third in the GLVC Tournament last season. This was the highest finish the team has had in school history and also became the first Lewis team to reach the final day of the tournament. Carolina Alvarado was named to the GLVC All-Tournament Team.

Alvarado, a fifth year public relations and advertising senior from Metepec, Mexico, is looking forward to her final year competing. She transferred to Lewis last year after spending three seasons at Quincy University.

The beginning of last season got off to a rough start as the team had only two wins in the first 10 matches of the season. “The season had ups and downs, but at the end we came through, and it was definitely exciting,” Alvarado said. “I had fun and I’m just excited for my last year.”

In the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) NCAA Division II/III preseason poll, the team is ranked ninth. Five other GLVC opponents are listed in the poll as well. The Flyers are ranked lower than all of their conference counterparts, even after beating Central Missouri and McKendree in the GLVC Tournament last season. The team received votes in the NTCA NCAA All-Division preseason poll.

Head coach Scott Taylor is back for another year at the helm. He has been the head coach since the program was created in 2018. Taylor, an alum of Lewis, looks to guide the team for another run at the GLVC title and a chance to clinch an automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. He will look toward Alvarado, graduate transfer Marissa Metcalfe, seniors Alyson Young and Savanna Jourdan and junior Katharine Svehla this season to lead the team to a GLVC title. To him, a successful season would be “[our athletes] fulfilling their potential both on the lanes and in the classroom.”

Last season, senior Erica Lohr qualified for the Intercollegiate Singles Championship, in which she reached the quarterfinals. She also became the first Flyer to bowl at the United States Bowling Congress national championships. This season, she joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach. “It is great to have former bowlers like Erica and Kayla Dench on staff to help out when needed or available,” Taylor said. “They know how I like things and are bought into the program.”
