Lewis University boasts a diverse display of talented students, ranging from athletes to mathematicians, journalists and artists in various educations. Notably, the University hosts numerous events throughout the year to showcase the skill of its theater and arts community. Among these events, the Phillip Lynch Theater stands out as a venue for concerts and performances, welcoming both the public and students alike.
Recently, Core Ensemble presented “Tres Vidas,” a musical theater production celebrating the legacies of three historically significant Latin American women: Frida Kahlo, Rufina Amaya and Alfonsina Storni. Rosa Rodriguez, a Dominican actress, delivered a remarkable performance embodying all three iconic figures, garnering praise from audiences and critics. With a background in acting from The Acting Studio in New York, Rodriguez has showcased her talents in various theatrical productions and has been affiliated with Core Ensemble for eight years.
The show featured a repertoire of songs from many Latin countries including Mexico, El Salvador and Argentina, along with vocal and instrumental tangos by Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla. Additionally, original compositions by Osvaldo Golijov, Orlando Garcia, Pablo Ortiz and Manuel Demurga were specially crafted for Core Ensemble.
Looking ahead, Lewis is set to stage “Godspell” (2012,) written by Michael Tebalek and directed by Annie Calhoun. In addition to theatrical performances, Lewis offers live music experiences for students. The upcoming PAS Monarch Winds Concert promises an evening of woodwind quintet favorites from the 20th century and romantic era, featuring selections from Bernstein’s “West Side Story” and Persichetti’s “Pastoral,” alongside performances by the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra and other musical artists.
