While the majority of 2023 has passed, there are still plenty of release dates to look forward to, and one of those is on Dec. 8 for the release of the science fiction/romance movie titled “Poor Things”.
The synopsis given for the movie, which I found on the IMDb website, is intriguing. It’s about “the incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.”
I watched the official trailer released online and there were a few things that stood out to me while viewing. The settings and backgrounds of the clips shown were quirky and creative. There were lavish parties shown as well as futuristic buildings and artistic effects that made it unique compared to a regularly filmed movie.
This makes me excited to see this film, because it already visually has captured my interest. Another thing that stood out to me was that it seemed comedic. I predict that there will be some darker themes addressed in this film, but that there will be some light humor and fun sprinkled throughout. I personally am a big fan of humor and someone who needs it in situations that would otherwise be heavy, especially while watching movies.
The final thing I’ll talk about from the trailer is the role that Emma Stone plays a young woman named Bella Baxter, who was brought back to life. However, the only thing is that her brain and body aren’t developing at the same rate, so they are not in sync. Sometimes her behavior reflects this, for example the moment of her throwing a punch in a seemingly calm situation.
Stone is seen throughout the trailer walking around haphazardly and looks like she is super committed to the role, portraying the dysfunctional nature of her resurrected body in a funny and accurate way.
Emma Stone is accompanied by other well-known actors including Mark Ruffalo, probably best known for his role as Bruce Banner (The Hulk). Other notable names include Vicki Pepperdine, Ramy Youssef, and William Dafoe.
Some of the predictions I’ve seen online about this movie believe that “Poor Things” could be an Oscar contender. Though, others think that this movie may be too oddball and not mainstream enough to gain popularity. I guess it’ll just be a wait and see how it really looks to be and make our own opinions when it releases, which will be here before we know it!
