“Plane” brings all the action

If you are looking for a new movie to see in theaters, I would highly recommend “Plane”. This action packed movie recently released at the end of January, delivered an entertaining storyline that was quite satisfactory.Going into seeing the movie without having much information about it, I was shocked and pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it.

The captain of the plane, Brodie Terrance, is played by Gerard Butler. Butler was the Phantom in “The Phantom of the Opera” (2004), also starred in “Olympus Has Fallen”, another action-packed movie that was released back in 2013. The other pilot, Samuel Dele is played by Yoson An, who was Honghui in “Mulan” (2020). Bonnie Lane, the head flight attendant, is played by Daniella Pineda, who has had a role in the newest “Jurassic Park” movies.

Taking inspiration from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370, the movie depicts a plane (Trailblazer Airlines Flight 119 from Singapore to Honolulu via Tokyo) that goes missing after attempting to fly through a storm. Left in a seemingly hopeless situation, captain Terrance needs to figure out how to get contact with the search and rescue team. He also has to determine how to keep his passengers safe from the dangerous rebels hiding on the island. Captain Terrance can only look to Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter) for help, an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI.

There were many instances throughout the movie where I could see some possible inaccuracies, such as the physics in the end scene or how bullets never seemed to hit any of the main characters. Normally, this type of stuff would bother me because I enjoy when things are realistic. But, because of the overall plot and how much I was enjoying it, I just rolled with it to see where it would go. I mean in the end, it was a movie. My advice is viewers would need to just forget the lack of realisticness and just be entertained with what it is.

The ending was rather creative, as there were some plot twists, but also some events throughout the movie that were predictable. These events did take away from the main plot just a bit. Nonetheless, it was still an  enjoyable, traditional action movie. There are plenty of fight scenes and explosions, which was something I did not expect since I did not watch the trailers.

The overall audience reception was good. The audience score from Rotten Tomatoes was 94%. I would say the group of family members I watched the movie with also enjoyed it for what it was. There were some harsh reviews from film critics, but I think that they had higher expectations for it beyond just a regular action movie. I would still recommend it to people who are looking for something to see in theaters.

Considering I’m more of the rom-com type of person, this movie did catch my attention. I will sit down for a good action movie once in a while, and “Plane” is one of those movies that did it for me. If I had a more of an idea of what the plot was before I sat down in the theater, I also think it would’ve been a better experience for me. Or maybe due to my lack of knowledge before the movie, it helped make my viewing of it greater. Not one of my favorite movies, but still enticing.
