Weightlifting Club hosts first open gym meeting at Powerhouse

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, seniors Kaylee Follett and Paul Krupa held their first open gym meeting at the Powerhouse for new members and current members of the weightlifting club. Follett, a marketing and digital marketing major, is the president of the weightlifting club and Krupa, a marketing major, is the vice president of the club.

The club accepts anyone who wants to join it, regardless of their major or whether or not they’re an athlete, who are fond of exercising and want to build muscle.

“The Weightlifting Club is a community of Lewis students who like working out, want to improve themselves, learn more about weightlifting and make friends who will push them to level up,” said Follett.

The weightlifting club originally began in January last year but due to the pandemic, like many other clubs, they weren’t able to regularly meet.

“Unfortunately, we stopped meeting due to the pandemic,” said Follett. “We began working on bringing the club back at the beginning of this semester.”

The weightlifting club has an open gym at the Powerhouse every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. and the time slot is reserved for only the members of the club.

“All registered members of the weightlifting club are welcome to use the Powerhouse during this time,” said Follett. “We also plan on implementing an after-hours open gym once or twice a month, again exclusively for members and these dates and times are to be determined.”

Other than those set times, students in the club are encouraged to reach out to other members so that they can organize meetup times during regular hours when the Powerhouse is open.

Activities of the weightlifting club consist of mainly lifting the weights that are provided for everyone to use, as well as asking each other any questions about weightlifting.

“When the weightlifting club meets, members are welcome to hit the weights however they would like and are welcome to ask each other questions about form and weightlifting,” said Follett. “We intend on adding some friendly competition in the future with challenges and leadership boards.”

The club welcomes new members because while working on their physical fitness, they can improve themselves while being surrounded by other people who share the same interest in working out.

“Students should join this club if they enjoy weightlifting or are looking to learn more about it,” said Follett.
