The Jet Fuel Review magazine (JFR) has defended their 2019 first place award at the College Media Association (CMA). Continuing their winning streak, JFR won a second time with their 19th Issue in the category Four-Year Literary Magazine at the CMA competition in Washington D.C. The CMA competition was held virtually from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24.
Chief JFR faculty adviser Dr. Simone Muench said she was “Shocked, surprised and ecstatic” over their win. She was happy about the win and said, “Any endeavor has the chance to expand if you have good people who will put in the hard work.”
From an internship opportunity founded by alum Mary Egan, JFR has grown into a magazine that makes the Lewis community proud and Dr. Jackie White even prouder.
White was the faculty adviser for JFR; she has been with JFR since 2011 and retired from Lewis as a recipient of the Reid H. Montgomery Distinguished Service Award last spring in 2020. “She was the first person I told,” said Dr. Muench when she found out that they won. Dr. White continues to serve as a consultant and asset for JFR.
With the assistance of Dr. Muench and Dr. White, professors of English studies and co-advisers, JFR also received two other awards. JFR placed second palace in the category “Best Arts and Entertainment Story” and also placed second in the category “Best Magazine Cover.”
The cover of the magazine was an art piece from artist Deandra Lee, titled “Path.” Junior English major Jordyn Spangler joined JFR in spring 2019. Her selections of art pieces helped JFR win second place in the “Best Magazine Cover.”
Spangler was both shocked and happy when she found out her selection greatly contributed to JFR. She believes it was the right decision to join JFR. While JFR has a small publication staff compared to other universities, it has persevered against some of the most nationally ranked Universities such as Vanderbilt University, Oregon State University and Central Michigan University.
The 19th issue of JFR, headed by Managing Editor and senior English major Patricia Damocles and it’s editors reviewed about 600 submissions. The student-run magazine and it’s advisers put in extra time to review each submission from categories such as creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry and artwork.
Although submissions for Jet Fuel Review have ended, it will reopen on Jan. 15. The submission deadline ends on March 15th. Students are encouraged to submit work or to join the JFR team, and according to Dr. Muench, it’s “Perfect to add to your resume.”
