Despite being on a five-game losing streak, the  softball team is battling for rights to manage their second winning season in three years.

In addition, the Flyers are looking at their chance to qualify for the GLVC tournamnet that is quicky approaching.

This year’s team has a 22-21 overall record with only eight more games left to finish their regular season. The team has struggled in the GLVC as they are currently 10-12 and rank 10th in the conference. The team must crack the top eight to earn their spot in the conference tournament.

The team is working hard to finish this season with a record  above .500.

The Flyers could use junior Kaylee Prieto’s help as she’s currently their leading hitter, has the highest stats on the team and is tied for second in the GLVC with 60 total base hits. Prieto also placed second with a .411 batting average in the entire GLVC.

Sophomore Dara Sanders is becoming an all-star pitcher for the Flyers by recording a stellar 15-7 record. She also holds the highest ERA with 2.08, as well as producing 131 strikeouts this season. Sanders is currently placed fifth in the GLVC with most wins by pitchers and finds herself fourth in strikeouts.

Head Coach Becky Pearl is going into her third season with the Flyers. She is trying to make a turnaround by leading the team in hopes of making their sixth GLVC tournament appearance in seven years.

The team won their last GLVC championship in 2011, finishing the season with a 36-14 record, but has yet to return to the tournament final since 2013.

If this year’s team manages to qualify in the GLVC tournament, they would have to compete against the best in the conference, such as Rockhurst University and University of Southern Indiana.

They would also face tough teams in their conference, including Mckendree University and Truman State University.

The team needs to start an eight-game winning streak in order to participate in the upcoming conference tournament that begins May 5 at Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill.

If the team manages to make the tournament, they will participate in their 11th GLVC tournament in school history.

They will finish their home games of the season April 29, against Drury for Senior Day and Missouri S&T on April 30 to finish their regular season.
