Letter to the Editor

This letter is in response to the article, Students Frustrated by Increase in Parking Fees published in issue 1 on Sept. 23.

Student parking fees have been established to cover the costs incurred to build and maintain campus parking lots. These costs include the Village of Romeoville permitting fees, engineering fees, design fees, earthwork, paving, routine sealcoating & line painting, night time lighting, storm water management and snow removal, landscaping, trees, and repairs. On average, a parking space will cost approximately $3,500 to build and maintain during a 20 year period.  Most recently, Lot GG with 375 spaces cost $1 million to construct excluding yearly maintenance and utility costs.  The University has built and maintains more than 3,500 spaces on campus.  The $5 parking fee increase per semester is necessary to help offset these costs. However, it should be noted that students may excuse themselves from this fee and park in Lot NN at no charge at any time.
