University Ministry is raising money to purchase new Gather hymnals for the Sancta Alberta Chapel.

For a $25 gift, alumni and benefactors can dedicate a hymnal with a personalized bookplate that will be placed in the back cover.

According to Dennisa Walker, associate director of annual giving, dedications can be offered “in honor of students, alumni, parents, faculty, organizations or loved ones.”

“These new hymnals will provide a greater variety and selection of music than our current hymnals, which are probably over 15 years old,” said Steven Zlatic, Lewis alum and director of university ministry. “They also contain the current wording of the mass, so that people feel more comfortable participating.”

Lent is the Catholic season of prayer and fasting, but almsgiving is also important this time of year. Giving back at Lewis and beyond is part of what the Catechism of the Catholic Church calls “a work of justice pleasing to God,” even through something as simple as song.

“This fundraiser is really important to ministry,” Zlatic said. “So many people connect spiritually through music and participating in worship services.”

University Ministry hopes to raise enough funds to dedicate 250 new hymnals by Easter Sunday, but will continue to accept gifts online at for the rest of the spring semester.
