With the Student Governing Board’s (SGB) election coming up on March 19-20, Rachel Stella created a series of video interviews and profiles on this year’s candidates.
Candidate: Jessica “Jay” McKenzie
Year: Junior
Major: Music
Resident or commuter: Commuter
Current and past leadership experience at Lewis: SGB treasurer and member at large, musical director and event coordinator of Harmonic Uprising, public relations for Theta Kappa Pi sorority
Other interests: Reading, crafts, graphic design, singing
If you are elected, what would you bring to your position?
“Vice president … (has) to be very good at logistics, because they are planning both spring and fall formal … As far as that goes, I am incredibly good at logistics; I’m always thinking about the big picture, as well as the little things that really need to get done.”
What do you see at Lewis that needs improvement, and how would you go about changing that?
“Organizations on campus aren’t exactly as ‘popular’ as I personally would like to see them. I really think that getting involved in campus is one of the biggest college experiences that you can have. Not only involvement, but publicity for the organizations — getting their names out there, as well as SGB’s names out there — to get the bigger population of the school involved is one of our biggest problems … I would like to … let people know that we’re here, and that there’s more options on campus than just intermurals and the things that normally get publicized.”
What specific ways do you plan to address student concerns?
“Each student concern is unique, and they have to be addressed in specific ways. Being on e-board this semester has really given me that experience to know that … the different people you would have to talk to depends on the concern. So, just identifying the concern and what department you’d need to talk to in order to get it done.”
