Lewis University is now offering students new semester and summer study abroad opportunities. The new programs are based in France, Costa Rica, Japan and Poland.
In the semester San Jose, Costa Rica program, students have the choice of studying one to four Spanish language courses depending on language level and interest. Students will also live in homestays and be taken on excursions.
The San Jose, Costa Rica program gives students the opportunity to stay for one month during the summer and earn five credits while studying the Spanish language. In addition to the regular intensive Spanish courses, there are special language tracks that the students can pursue. The special language tracks include Spanish for business, Spanish for law enforcement officials and Spanish for medical professionals.
“I loved study abroad because I felt I was able to experience a culture different from my own while learning about different people and places with friends and teachers,” said senior Ryan Arciero. “I had fun and learned at the same time.”
The summer Paris, France program is a one-month intensive language program, while the semester program is French language study combined with courses taught in English. Each program will be held at the Catholic University of Paris near the Latin Quarter, and students will also live in homestays.
Students in the Tokyo, Japan program will study the Japanese language and Japanese-related courses taught in English at Musashi University. Students will live at an international dormitory located near the university. The in-country staff arranges activities throughout the semester to provide students with the chance to explore Tokyo as well as the rest of Japan.
During either the fall or spring semesters, students can live in Krakow, Poland while taking courses at Jagiellonian University. In addition to taking one course in the Polish language, students can take multiple English courses in humanities and social sciences. Students will also live in shared apartments located near the city center. Many excursions are built into the program, including a trip to Budapest in the fall and a trip to Prague in the spring.
“Lewis programs are very affordable,” said Director of International Study Abroad, Chris Swanson. “While there are a few programs that are more expensive due to the cost of living in the country, most of the programs are the cost of Lewis tuition, housing and fees. In addition, students can use all of their financial aid toward a Lewis University study abroad program since they are registered for the Lewis equivalents of the courses they take abroad.”
The deadline for all summer and fall programs is Feb. 28. Also, a new online application system is available, which makes applying for study abroad programs easier. Students also need to submit a short essay, official transcripts and have two recommendations from Lewis University professors.
