The President’s 5th Annual Juried Competition will be held Feb. 4-28 in the newly constructed art gallery, Oremus Fine Arts Building.

“We anticipate around 40 students and alumni to submit. Each artist is allowed to submit up to five pieces,” said Gallery Coordinator, Natalie Swain.

The competition will feature various works of art from current students and, for the first time, alumni. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily.

“I have three pieces from the past semester that I am entering; all watercolor and ink pieces,” said senior Jillian Carlberg. “I am really excited about the show because it is always awesome to see what other people are creating. Not only is it a place to share inspiration, but show off the talent of Lewis students and alums.”

Members of the department choose the work selected for the show and the awards as well. $1000 in cash will be dispersed in increments that are decided by the jurors. The jurors often include a “Best in Show” as well as a few additional prizes.

“I have attended all of the previous President’s Art Shows, and I would say that my favorite aspect of the shows in the past has been the quality of the work, as well as meeting the artists and their families,” Swain said. “This will be a special show because of the new space. People that come to the show, as well as the artists, will enjoy the fact that the work is now in a beautiful and professional art gallery. There are three other professional shows scheduled for the rest of the spring semester.”

There will be an opening reception and awards ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. Feb. 6. Contact Swain at 815-588-7179 or swainna@lewisu.edu for more information.
