Pictured above: Sophomore Print/Multimedia Journalism major Alex Veeneman is always on the phone in the Flyer office trying to schedule an interview.
Who is Alex Veeneman? I’m The Flyer’s Opinions Editor, a public broadcasting supporter and have an eclectic range of music.
Chopin’s Waltz in A Flat Major (Op. 42), Zoltan Kocsis -- Chopin is my favorite composer and of his eclectic range of pieces, this is one of my favorites. Kocsis delivers a flawless performance of one of his best.
Rock N Roll Star, Oasis -- Oasis redefined the sound of rock and roll in the ’90s. This song led the way for them to do that.
Oh Fortune, Dan Mangan -- I first heard Dan perform this on Canada’s CBC Radio--how he did it gave this wonderful sound, evolving from a simple acoustic track to a great indie sound.
Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the New York Philharmonic -- Woody Allen used this version in the film Manhattan as the opener to a perfect tribute to New York. Sounded brilliant then and still does now.
Silly Love Songs, Paul McCartney -- The first (and only) concert I’ve attended was by McCartney when he came here in 2005. I have many favorites by The Beatles (and McCartney) and this is one of them.
Flamenco Sketches, Miles Davis -- Kind of Blue is one of the best albums ever recorded, and this is one of the best songs ever recorded.
The Very Thought of You, Shirley Horn -- This version of the standard done in ’01 was outstanding and one of the best recordings of the 21st century.
The City, Sarah Harmer -- She performed this on the CBC’s Vinyl Cafe radio show and was hooked after hearing it. It is flawless--Sarah’s a true talent.
Beijing, Patrick Watson -- The percussion, string and piano backing help aide a great song by a great performer.
It’s Not Unusual, Tom Jones -- He’s simply a legend.
