The athletic program has launched a new student reward program for the 2011-2012 school year.

Students can accumulate points by swiping their ID card at each home athletic event.  The points students earn can go toward prizes such as $1,000 for tuition, a 40-inch LCD TV, an Apple iPad 2, a laptop computer, a $200 Lewis Bookstore gift card or $100 gift cards.

The freshman with the most points wins a $75 gift card and is named Rookie of the Year, while the commuter with the most points wins a $75 gift card and is named Commuter of the Year.

Home events are given a point range of one to five points. There are also various point levels that students allow students to earn awards.

According to junior and Lewis baseball player Ian O’Connor, the reward system will be beneficial to both athletes and students.

“I think the Student Fan Reward Program will definitely bring more student fans to sports games,” O’Connor said. “The program has a lot of good incentives, and as a student athlete, it is always nice to see more students come out to our games.”

Senior Erik Passerelli shared a similar belief.

“I feel that this program can bring big-time motivation to our athletes by having more fans at the sporting events that would not usually come if they did not have an incentive to be there,” Passarelli said. “I hope that this Student Reward Program takes off in a big way. It can be a win-win for both the fans and the athletes.”

Junior Sara Dastice explained her thoughts on both the Student Fan Reward Program and student involvement in general.

“I think that it is really important for students to get involved in the school’s sporting events,” said Dastice. “I believe that the student fan’s support motivates our athletes to do better. I think that the Student Fan Reward Program is a great way to get students involved and that it will lead to other advancements for our school, such as a positive environment for our students as well as our student athletes.”

The contest is scheduled to end April 29, 2012, at the baseball doubleheader vs. Bellarmine University. The points will continue to accumulate through the first game of the doubleheader.

The names of the fans with the ten highest point totals, the Rookie of the Year and the Commuter of the Year will be announced on the field before the second games begins.
