We all live busy lives; however, it shouldn’t mean our health loses its priority. How can we handle the demands in our lives when our bodies are being run down? Lewis provides an array of exercise classes and events that can fit any packed schedule. We all know exercise is important, but finding time for it is always an ordeal.
“There are lots of free programs and activities available for everyone to take advantage of,” said Jill Siegfried, Director of Student Recreation and Fitness & Wellness Programs.
There are numerous free classes students can take Monday through Thursday, with popular classes such as Zumba, step, yoga and cardio combat just to name a few.
Senior elementary education major Katie Massingill said she got involved with cardio combat because regular workouts got boring, and with classes the time passes quicker.
“I feel more motivated to work out because it’s more exciting,” said Massingill.
Angelica Wrona, another elementary education major, got involved with cardio combat because of her friend Massingill, and decided to attend the class on a regular basis.
“When you come with a group of friends, you guys have more fun together and it motivates you more,” said Wrona. “You know you’re not working out by yourself, and you motivate and push yourself.”
There are a range of 20 classes Monday through Thursday. All of them are free and commitment isn’t overwhelming, according to Sam De Legge, Graduate Assistant of Fitness and Wellness.
Siegfried encourages students and faculty to exercise, saying, “We look forward to seeing everyone in the building attending wellness programs, taking exercise classes and just trying to stay as healthy as they can.”
For informational purposes, students can attend the wellness lectures, usually held on Wednesdays at noon. The first event starts Sept. 28, with the topic of “Mindful Eating.” Food will also be provided at these events free of charge.
As far as new events, Siegfried mentioned Homecoming Triathlon, which will entail a short mile run, a bike ride and the swimming event. More details will be announced when the event is closer.
Intramural sports are available as well to help students stay fit while having fun.
“It was one of the best times I’ve had playing intramurals at Lewis. I am glad I had the team I had and I can’t wait to play again next semester,” said junior radio/television major Joseph Preston, who participated in intramural soccer.
“In terms of physical health, every soccer player knew this season was coming soon; therefore, weeks and weeks of constant running, abs and push-ups prepared me to participate at a higher level than I was before in the intramural competition,” said sophomore double major in marketing and accounting, Abraham Adrianzen. “Mentally…being involved in this sport along with the Lewis community was only another time of gaining happiness. Soccer is and always will be a sport meant to enjoy the game and bring everybody together…and that is what it did Sept. 12 at 10:15 p.m.”
With all the programs offered, anyone can find an activity that can fit any schedule.
“Just give something a try,” said De Legge. “Step outside your comfort zone. Think outside the box of your elliptical or treadmill, and I guarantee once you try it, you’ll have fun in a social atmosphere and getting exercise in.”
