Both the men and women’s golf teams took to the links once more over Easter break, as the squads begin to settle in for the stretch run of the season.
The men’s golf team played in The Jewell at Cherry Blossom Golf Course from April 2-3. Lewis ranked in 10th place after the first round, mainly due to a problem with the 18th hole that lost them a few spots in the rankings, proving every hole is as important as the next. The Flyers lost hold of tenth place on day two and slid back to 13th out of 24 teams at the event, finishing two strokes out of an 11th place finish. The Flyers final score as a team was 607. Indianapolis took home the championship with a final team score of 562.
“We’re off to a good start, we just had a problem with the 18th hole,” head coach Skip Steffey said. “It probably cost us five spots in the standings. However, Casey continues to be a steadying influence.”
Junior Casey Pyne was the first round leader for the Flyers, but on day two it was all about senior Paul Dagys rising to the top of his team’s leaderboard. Dagys finished one stroke ahead of Pyne and tied for 27th overall with his final score of 148. He was followed by Pyne, who tied for 31st. Senior Peter Tanaka and junior Logan Watts each finished with final scores of 155, which was good enough for them to tie for 68th overall.
The Flyers ranked 6th out of the 13 Great Lakes Valley Conference teams featured in this particular tournament. Lewis’ next tournament is April 11-12, as they participate in their third regional of the season at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.
The Lady Flyers also hit the links for one tournament over break, as they participated in the NKU spring invitational at the Perry Park Golf Club. The Flyers had a rough time getting their footing at the event, which in the end garnered them a 16th place finish. They ended with a final team score of 687. Lindsey Wilson College went on to win the event with a final score of 613.
“It was a disappointing finish,” Steffey said. “We had an opportunity to move past some teams ahead of us in a race for an NCAA Regional berth but we just didn’t get it done.”
The Flyers did have one player finish in the top 30 though, as freshman Nicole Tucker finished with a final score of 159, which tied her for 27th overall. Another freshman, Carly Shapiro, came in second for the Flyers with a final score of 170, which placed her in a tie for 64th place overall.
“Nicole and Carly each played three good nines and one bad one, the rest of the team just couldn’t quite put it together,” said Steffey,
Senior Allison Snyder was next on the team, finishing tied for 92nd with her final score of 177.
The Lady Flyers will be looking to rebound from this disappointing tournament when they hit the tees on April 11-12 to compete in the Loyola Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
