With spring break behind us, the student radio station WLRA is holding a marathon radio event, titled “To Kill a DJ” to benefit “Change for Children”. For the past 10 years students collect pledges for each hour that they stay on the air. The donations attained during the event will directly benefit the Children’s Hospital Family Assistance Fund when assists families of hospitalized children during their time of need.

The college students are able to not only learn from practical experience gained while on the radio, they also have a chance to give back to their community. These are some important life skills that will help them further themselves in the future as well as gain a sense of accomplishment for humanity. What better way to gain such accomplishment than from helping children.

“Lewis University is very proud that our students have so enthusiastically responded to providing support to Hope Children’s Hospital,” said Brother James Gaffney. “Their generous determination to assist families of hospitalized children and their concern for those young patients reflects the Lewis Mission value of Justice in affirming the equal dignity of every person and the promotion of personal and social responsibility.”

It sets a great example for the university when students are involved in community service efforts. Advocate Christ Medical Center and Hope Children’s Hospital recently included Lewis University on its donor wall, recognizing that Lewis University students, faculty, and staff have raised over $35,000 for the hospital. People will now see our university’s name and associate it with being charitable and helpful in the community.

It is through these individuals that other Lewis students can get motivated to take action within their communities. When we are able to help those in need it gives us a greater appreciation for what we may gain in life. As a college student embarking on a new life journey it is great to start that journey in a positive way. We can only hope that the continued support of those unselfish students can benefit those families that are in need.

Lewis University continues to offer the surrounding communities support in the form of monetary donations as well as in productive graduates. It is a situation that will continue to benefit us all.
