There are many tools needed to be a successful student, and many may take them for granted. These tools include pens, pencils, notebooks, folders and a book bag for carrying it all in. To some these items may seem insignificant, but many others struggling to obtain. What about children and teenagers whose families cannot afford these common scholastic requirements? The Lewis chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho is participating in a national effort called Operation Big Book Bag to ensure students the availability of such items.
Operation Big Book Bag is the “brain child of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc,” explained Samantha Goga, president of the Lewis sorority. “Selected facilities across the nation are chosen to receive a variety of school supplies.” This year the supplies collected at Lewis will be donated to The Youth Symposium student participants of Sigma Gamma Rho’s alumni chapter, Theta Chi Sigma.
Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. was founded in 1922 and has held education as its focus. “This is why we hold this event in such regards,” said Goga. “We firmly believe that every child has a right and should be offered the means to a quality education”
Operation Big Book Bag is more than a school supply drive. It includes mentoring and tutoring programs such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, which Sigma Gamma Rho will be teaming up with this year to help fulfill their dedication to education.
The event also assists “shelters, centers, schools and hospitals in their efforts to meet some of the educational needs of children and young adults housed at the facilities,” said Goga. “[Operation Big Book Bag] provides children with the means of completing their homework assignments so that they may remain current on course projects and requirements.”
From now through March 1, collection boxes will be placed around campus for students and faculty to contribute to the collection of school supplies. The convenient locations include the main entrance to the library, Charlie’s Place, the Courtyard, the second floor of De La Salle, the chapel and the Academic Building.
