One out of every six Americans face hunger on a regular basis, and one out of four people in line at food banks is a child, according to recent government figures.  Hunger is a major issue in today’s society, and Sodexo, Inc. has established a way to help.

The Sodexo Foundation is offering a STOP Hunger scholarship nationally, for the fourth consecutive year.  The scholarships were introduced to support education of young people working to end hunger across the country, and to draw attention to the revolutionary solutions that they are implementing.

“Hunger is a real and prevalent problem in America,” said Shondra Jenkins, director of community relations for Sodexo, Inc. “We want to spread the word widely to all those who are working to end this national tragedy that we are offering these scholarships to help them pay for school.  And we hope that they will apply.”

Up to five students will be selected as national winners. These winners will receive a $5,000 scholarship award and a matching $5,000 grant in their name for the hunger-related charity of their choice.  Additionally, 20 regional winners will be given a $1,000 grant in their name for the charity of their choice.

“These scholarships provide financial support to young people who are working to help the lives of others,” Jenkins said.  “Helping make their education more affordable is an investment in the next generation in the fight against hunger in America.”
To be eligible for this scholarship opportunity, students must be enrolled in an accredited education institution and be able to demonstrate an on going commitment to hunger-relief activities in their community.

“Past winners run a wide gamut of activities, including organizing and running food drives for local food banks, engaging their fellow students and friends to get involved, working through faith-based and community groups and some have even formed their own anti-hunger organizations,” said Jenkins.

The deadline for scholarship applications is Feb. 26.  Scholarships winners will be presented on June 10 at the Sodexo Foundation dinner in Washington, D.C.
