Approximately 6.7 billion people inhabit the world; 1.02 billion of those are hungry. Sixteen thousand children die from hunger every day- that’s one child every five seconds, according to Bread for the World.
Lewis’ Art Department, University Ministry, Student Development & Leadership and Sodexho are teaming together to support the Empty Bowls Project. This project is a movement to help end hunger.
The Lewis community has been invited to sessions that would paint the bowls that Leslie Colonna, an instructor for the art and design department, made from clay. These sessions have been announced since August.
“So far, we have about 120 bowls,” said Colonna. “Our goal is to get to 200 bowls, or more.”
Open studio sessions to paint bowls are still being announced, and Colonna emphasizes for students to check their Lewis e-mail accounts regularly for these dates.
Friday Oct. 23 and Wednesday Oct. 28 are the next set of dates for sessions to paint bowls for charity. Students and faculty are welcomed to attend these sessions between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., in room FA- 104.
The final event for the Empty Bowls Project will be Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The event is a luncheon, open to the public, and will be held in the University Dining Room.
“People can come in and buy a bowl, fill it with soup and take the bowl home,” said Colonna.
The bowls are $10 each; half of the proceeds will be given to University Ministry for their efforts and projects, and half will be divided to Morning Star Mission and Daybreak Homeless Shelter.
The luncheon will also be an Arts and Ideas event, with speakers from the local charities, Martha Villegas- Miranda from the ministry and Colonna. Sodexho will be donating the soup.
